technically this belongs in general chat but I didn't want to shove down Aves's recent thread, so I stuck it here
This is mostly a promotion for a TV show called the 100. It's one of my favorites, but unfortunately the viewership is low and it's in danger of cancellation/no renewal. So please read if you have the time and think about tuning into the show on Wednesday evenings on the CW! It's got a full season (12 episode) already on netflix if you're in the mood for binge watching.
PLOT SUMMARY:
97 years ago, the earth was under nuclear war that got out of control, resulting in a nuclear apocalypse. It left the earth simmering in radiation, unfit for human survival. Thankfully, twelve nations had operational space stations at the time, which banded together to form the Ark. It holds the last of the humans, some 3000 people. It is believed that the earth needs another century for it to finally become survivable for mankind. However, a flaw is found in the oxygen filtration system, and so the Ark only has two months of air left before it runs out completely.
On the Ark, even the smallest crimes are punishable by death, in order to save as many resources as possible. However, minors (under 18) cannot be floated (airlocked into space, execution method) until they become of age, so those who commit crimes are locked up until then. The council of the Ark send all 100 of the prisoners in a dropship to the ground; to see if it is survivable and to buy them another month or so of air. Unfortunately, on the way down, the communication systems are damaged, leaving the 100 practically on their own.
Obviously, the Earth turns out to be survivable. The story follows a 17 year old girl named Clarke Griffin and her journey with several other main characters in surviving in the wilderness (also remember that these are teens who have been on a spaceship their whole life, so they know almost nothing about the earth). It also follows the Ark and how they try to figure out how to save its people, since they don't know that the 100 are alive.
It's science-fiction, but not in a foreign or alien way. It leans more towards the science than the fiction. There's not a lot of romance (but enough to make shippers happy, I guess). My favorite thing about the show is the character development; for instance, one of the main characters first introduce you probably think is a selfish jerk, but then by half-way through the season you're in love with them; then there's another who you think you'll love and ship them with another person but turn sour. (Spoilers!) The development all seems very realistic and the wide-range of character personality makes the show relatable.
A brief main character description:
Clarke Griffin - She tends to yell a lot, but I guess someone has to get after the 99 other juvenile delinquents running around. She's a leader, a fighter, extremely stubborn, and occasionally too impulsive. Her father was the chief engineer who discovered the oxygen problem, and when he was going to tell the Ark citizens about it they had him floated. Her mother is the chief doctor, hence Clarke is sort of the 100's medic.
The first couple of episodes are kind of slow, but there's a big plot twist at the end of episode 3, and it takes off from there.
