someone asked me one day, "What is that weird show even about? It sounds dumb."
yes
at first to me too it sounded really dumb. i mean, fairytale characters that exist in our world? does sound pretty stupid/cheesy
I started watching it because one of my forum friends (who has since gone inactive //weeps//) was always raving about the episodes, so I gave it a try
AND NOW I AM HERE TO EXPLAIN THE SHOW TO YOU
so you've seen me talk about it before
i'm sure the majority of you will sigh and exit this thread
congrats if you actually read on
btw, basically the ENTIRE thing of the show is that the Evil Queen used a curse to banish everyone in the Enchanted forest to another realm, a realm without happy endings and magic (aka our world apparently). While they were cursed there, they never aged and had no memory of their true selves, having been given fake lives. The town they live in is called Storybrooke and it's on the coast of Maine
LETS START WITH DA CHARACTERS
PRINCE CHARMING
in short:
was born and raised a Sheppard under the name David
had a twin he never knew about named James, because his twin was sold to a ruthless king because he and his wife couldn't have children
so twin was really more of an evil twin, but James and David never met because James was killed beforehand. The king needed his son to kill one of the neighboring kingdom's dragons (because they would reward his kingdom with sorely-needed money), so he brought in his twin, David, after James died, to finish the job. He only had to act like a Prince, and the guards would kill the dragon, after which he would go home to his farm and mother
but then the said neighboring king offered his daughter's hand to David (who was pretending to be James) and the king threatened to kill his mother if he didn't accept
thus he was arranged to be married to Abigail (the princess) whom neither of them loved the other. then he met snow white
long story short it all worked out and he and snow got married yay
his cursed name is David Nolan and he worked with cuddly animals at the shelter before the curse was broken and he remembered who he was
played by the lovely Ginnifer Goodwin and soon to be Mrs. Dallas
I should explain real quick, in that most episodes, it's divided into two plots: one happens in current time, the other happens back in the enchanted forest. Most of the time they parrallel. So if we're learning about Cinderella's past in the Enchanted Forest, we'll be learning about her cursed life in present in the same episode. so yeah, anyways, in the EF she had long hair
but then when the curse struck she got a pixie cut
i hate it
it bothers me so much
anyways
listen, OUAT takes classic fairytales and puts a twist on them. In this case, Regina, the Evil Queen, hated Snow White, not because she thought she was prettier, but because Snow was the reason he first love, Daniel, a stableboy, was killed by her mother. So there's this long-lasting, murderous rage against Snow Regina's had, and so yeah that stretches on for many seasons
the rest pretty much follows the original tale, she lives as a bandit in the woods with dwarves (except she takes care of herself and isn't dainty), marries Charming, ect etc.
her cursed name was Mary Marget Blanchard, and it always drove me crazy because nobody would call her just "Mary" it always had to be "Mary Margret" ugh
actress is Jennifer Morrison
I'll try and keep this short
So Rumpelstiltskin told Snow and Charming that the Queen was releasing the curse, and that only their daughter (snow was pregnant with her at the time) would be able to break it. However, she would only be able to break it on her 28th birthday. Snow and Charming found out that a wardrobe carved out of the last remaining enchanted tree could save only one person from the curse. Originally preganant snow was going to go into it so she could raise Emma in this new world, but she gave birth beforehand so they had to send Emma in alone. Just after they put her in, the curse arrived and so all the characters were transported to Maine, given fake identities, and time didn't move in this town. It was frozen for 28 years, so nobody aged.
So Emma grew up in an orphanage. When she was 6 months old she was adopted until she was 5, where they sent her back because her foster parents wanted a family of their own (that's how she got the surname Swan; they knew her name was Emma because the baby blanket she was in said her name on it). She was 17 and just out of the foster system when she met Neal: long story short, he ditched her, she ended up in jail pregnant, and ended up giving her son up for adoption.
28 years later her son, Henry, found her and dragged her back to Storybrooke. Very long story and reasons short, she decided to stick around for Henry's sake since his mother was a jerk.
she ends up breaking the curse at the end of season 1, blah blah, is very shocked because everyone's fairytale characters, yaddy yaddy ya.
so because she wasn't affected by the curse, she has no curse name/identity.
She is also the product of True Love, which means she has magic.
Since she was 28 when she broke the curse, it makes her about the same age as her parents.

REGINA MILLS
aka the Evil Queen, played by Lana Parilla
yes if you guessed regina is latin for queen (seems a bit redundant, saying "Queen Regina" is like saying "Queen Queen")
anyways
the whole point of the curse was for her to take revenge on Snow. From her POV, she had her happiness taken away when Snow (Snow was like 12 and Regina was something like 19) blabbed to Regina's evil mommy about how she was going to run away with the stableboy Daniel rather than marry Snow's father, King Leopold. Snow didn't know Cora (Regina's mum) was gonna kill Daniel, so it was an accident, but Regina continues to blame Snow for it all. Forced to marry the king, she officially becomes Snow's step-mother (they actually had a decent relationship before Daniel was killed).
It was Daniel's death that triggered Regina to learn magic. So angry at her mother, she shoved her through a looking glass (aka sending her to Wonderland), accidentally using magic. She was then taught by Rumpelstiltskin, originally for the purpose of finding a way to bring back Daniel, but she found none. Slowly she grew more corrupt.
When she cast the curse, she told Snow, "It's a place where the only happy ending will be mine." (Aka her happy ending was seeing others suffer, because she was jealous they all had happy endings but her). She (along with the Mad Hatter, but that's another story) was the only one to remember her true self during the curse.
however she found herself still lonely after the sameness mundane of every day in the town, so she adopted a kid (who, turns out, is Emma's son, Henry). Regina really does love Henry, and was a good mother, but she was also the Evil queen and ruthless (btw she was the Mayor of the town). her and Emma tend to fight a lot over Henry but at the end of the day they both respect each other.

RUMPELSTILTSKIN
The best way to describe him in the EF is a malevolent imp. He has green skin that's sorta scaley, strange costumes, this sorta unnerving impish giggle, and a weird voice. A+++ villian. I love the way he's portrayed by Robert Carlyle. When he was hit by the curse, he looked more normal, like how he did before he became the Dark One.
Rumpel use to be just an ordinary man. He was married to a woman called Milah and they were both spinsters, before Rumpel got called to the front for the ogre wars. At first, he was excited. His father had been a coward, and he wanted to prove to everyone he wouldn't be like him. However, right before they were to ride into battle, a seer told him that his actions would leave his son fatherless, and that those who rode out tomorrow would all die. On finding out that he was going to have a son, and not wanting him to grow up without a father, Rumpel lamed himself (hence the cane) in order to be sent home. Upon arrival, he found Milah with their baby son, Baelfire. However, Milah was upset at Rumpel, because he'd just proven what everyone suspected he'd be: a coward. Eventually Milah "dies", and I'll explain that in a moment.
So he grew up raising Baelfire. When Bae turned 14, he was automatically drafted for the war and would be carried off to fight. Rumpel, not wanting his son to probably die, was desperate. A man told him about the Dark One: a legendary man, who's soul was rotten to the core, and was the most powerful practitioner of magic in all the realms. But he had one weakness: a magical dagger, which was said to be the source of all his power. If you had the dagger, you controlled the dark one. The only way they could be killed was by their dagger, and if someone killed the Dark One, they got their powers. In short, Rumpel got the dagger, and was taunted by the Dark One into killing him. However, it turns out that not only do you get the powers, but become the Dark One yourself. Hence, Rumpel's soul started rotting from the outside in. The only one he would never hurt was his son, who now, with the fear of his powers, kept safe, but to everyone else he was a ruthless killer.
Eventually, Baelfire asked his father to come with him to another realm, one without magic, so that he could have his father back again without magic. He recieved a magic bean that could open a portal, one of the last beans remaining. Rumpel agreed. But at the last minute, hanging over the portal, he backed out, since he was still a coward at heart and couldn't let go of his powers. Baelfire dropped into the portal, and it closed behind him. Rumpelstiltskin immediately regretted what he'd done, and spent the next 300 years trying to find another way to make a portal to his son. He was actually the creator of the curse, as a means to get to the land without magic.

HENRY MILLS
Emma's son, played by Jared Gilmore.
He was adopted by Regina, but found Emma as his birth mother.
Everyone in Storybrooke thinks Henry's a little off-his-rocket, because he thinks everyone's a fairytale character. We never really figure out how he first thought of this, but we know it all started when his teacher, Mary Marget (Snow) gave him a book of old Fairytales.
He's only 10 when the show started, but now it's into his third season, so he's about 12-13 (and growing like a weed).
He's also, apparnetly, the Truest of Believers.

NEAL CASSIDY
Adult (300+)
Adult (300+)
Father of Emma's child. And, if you ask me, kinda a jerk. But that's probably my shipper goggles.
He and Emma met when Emma stole his car and he was in the backseat. He had actually stolen the car from someone else. In short, they had a relationship, and went around preforming petty theft and lived in his car.
At one point, they decide to settle down in Tallahassee, but they find out Neal is still wanted there for stealing some expensive watches a few years back. He stored them in a subway locker, and Emma suggests they fence them, get new identities, and they'd have real money (about $20,000).
Neal gives Emma one of the watches before running off to meet the fencer.
However, Neal is cornered by a man who calls himself August. August says he's "Emma's guardian angel" in a way, and tells Neal that she's suppose to break a curse. Neal doesn't believe him, until August shows him something in a box that changes his mine. August tells him that it's his (August's) job to make sure she breaks the curse, and that Neal had been caught in the crossfire. He persuades Neal to abandon Emma and sne dher to jail.
Neal calls in an anonymous tip to the police, who find Emma and arrest her for stolen possessions (the watch Neal gave her). She, only 17 at the time, is sent to jail for 11 months. She went looking for him when she got out, but never found him. He never knew about their son.
Eventually, they meet again 11 years later and Neal finds out about Henry.
Okay I'll be honest I really don't like Neal. Not just because Swanthief (EmmaxNeal) rivals my otp (Captain Swan) but because if he truly loved her, he wouldn't have abandoned her.
He's played by Michael Raymond-James, who is actually pretty funny.

KILLIAN JONES/ CAPTAIN HOOK
Killian Jones, AKA Captain Hook.
He and Red Riding Hood are my favorite characters.
I'll try and keep his backstory short:
He and Rumpel's wife, Milah, fell in love, so Milah left Rumpel. However, Rumpel was told that she was "stolen" by Killian's crew.
They return some years laters, when Rumpel's the dark one, and when he finds out Milah abandoned her own child, he is beyond angry. It ends with him ripping out and crushing her heart and Killian getting his left hand cut off. That's obviously where he becomes Captain Hook.
Since Rumpelstiltskin is immortal (except for his dagger but few know that), Hook sails off to Neverland to plot his revenge. Basically, he stews in his rage and vengeance for three hundred years in Neverland (since nobody ages there).
Unlike the above characters, Hook wasn't introduced until season 2, and even then he was only suppose to be around for a few episodes. However, his character received an amazing reaction, and the writers just kept bringing him back, until eventually they made him a season regular.
As it may be noted, I am a Captain Swan shipper (EmmaxKillian) so at least now you have some idea of what I flail about on occasion. I started shipping it when Killian was introduced, when Emma and he first met. Most of the OUAT called CSers delusional and crazy and that we were reading into things too much (it was most of the fandom, but particularly the Swanfire [NealxEmma] and SwanQueen [ReginaxEmma] shippers). TBH Swanqueen was never even a real ship. Like, it was shot down by the writers.
Anywhoodles, Killian Jones is played by Colin O'Liferuiner (O'Donoghue). He has his own O'Liferuiner tag on tumblr and google. He's a 30 year old Irish actor. In the wise words of Toby, HOTHOTHOTHOTHOT. I have an entire picture folder devoted to him and his illegal attractiveness. If I had to say I had any "celebrity" crushes, he and Jensen Ackles are it. (Colin's not really well known, he's more of a small-time actor. OUAT and The Rite were his only two really big things).
There's also a few more minor characters like
Red Riding Hood (also the werewolf)
the Mad Hatter (I feel so bad for him, his story is sad)
Granny
Peter Pan (who is actually EVILand gorgeous)
and a ton others
k thanks for reading bye
