Latina Nocturnarum Nocum
Latin of the Night Owlz
Salve meus amici, vel collega nocturna.
That translates to "Hello my friend, or fellow owl." After awhile, you should be able to translate simple sentences.
As you all know, my codename is "Quies". It's actually the Latin word for silence or tranquility. Others know me better as Shad. Whichever pleases you more. I've demonstrated several times that I love to speak Latin, as I have been a student of it for five years. Right now, I am on my sixth year of studying the language, and although exercises are a pain, I am very glad I learned it.
I've noticed for awhile now that a few owls seem to want to learn Latin, but their schools/curriculum do not offer classes. After a bit of thinking, I thought "Why not?" and decided to open a class.
Keep in mind you will only be learning basic Latin. Don't expect to be able to write a book on it. But by the time I'm done, you should be able to write it with easy. I am able to say very simple sentences aloud with just a little forethought, but this took me six years, so don't expect anything like that.
I hope you will consider joining this class. I'm open to anyone who wishes to join.
How the classes will work
Okay, the classes are relatively simple. There will be two a week, in the evenings. The times are yet to be decided, but will probably be around 7:00-9:00 EST. As I said, exact times are yet to be decided. One class will be on the weekends, the other during the week.
The "classroom" is a PM that will be shared between all the students and I. I'm thinking, maybe once or twice, that we could have a class over skype, but for the most part they will probably be over the private message. It will be relatively simple to use, and the class will be about an hour long (unless I find we need to cut it shorter).
The reasons the times are not yet fixed is because I want to figure out the best time for everyone to attend.
Latin Class and Your Life
One thing I want to make sure of is that you have your priorities straight when it comes to this class. Obviously, I do not want you falling behind on school because of this class, or not being able to get your homework done. Okay? Last thing you need is trouble because of this. If you can't make a class because you have too much homework, or something is going on, that's perfectly fine! Just left me know ahead of time, if you can. You know, in fact, you really don't have to show up to these classes at all. Not like you're paying for them. But it is your choice whether or not you really want to learn Latin.
Homework
When I say "homework", don't groan. You'll probably just get one simple exercise after each class, that should only take about 30 minutes at the very max. On average, they should take about 20 minutes. This is so I can really make sure you understand what we went over in class.
What Materials will I Need?
Pretty much nothing. I mean, if you really, really wanted to learn Latin, you could get the Latin Textbook "Henle 1A", but you don't need it for the class. The only thing you WILL require is some sort of document system. WordPad, Microsoft Word, etc. Even doing it on MS Paint would be fine (as long as you use Text). That's for homework. When you sign up, please let me know what you can use for this purpose. Other than that, all you need is a brain.
RULES
1. Homework has a due-date for a reason. Turn it in on time! If you have a viable excuse for it being late (too
much homework, no time, etc) please let me know!
2. You MUST attend the first class. It's required! I'll go through the ropes of how each class will work.
3. We will be using the same PM for every class. Codeword is salve. Put in the 'other' section of form.
4. I don't bite. Ask if you have any questions, I promise you won't look stupid.
5. PLEASE let me know ahead of time if you can't make class!
6. We will have breaks (Christmas break, spring break, etc.) The dates haven't been decided yet.
7. Pay attention in class. I might call on you to answer a question.
8. I shouldn't have to say this, but no cheating. This includes: using translators (like google translate),
looking up the answer, or asking other students for their answers.
9. I don't think I'm very stern and I offer lots of lee-way, but even I have my limits.
